I regularly dine in Barbeque Nation as it is close to my house and I love their food.

No-brainer!

But to my shock, I never tried their cajun potatoes even though I often heard about them.

Thanks to Instagram, I saw a reel of their cajun spice potato and was sold on the idea of trying them out myself.

So there I went, sat down, and ordered some of those potatoes, and I was flabbergasted by their taste and texture.

Here’s my iteration of cajun sauce with potatoes Barbeque Nation style that is just as spicy and flavorful.

Plus, it’s vegan and a great winter recipe too.

What are Cajun Potatoes?

Cajun potatoes are a tangy and spicy dish that emerged from the Cajun cuisine, originated by French Acadian people who settled in America.

Normally potatoes are cut into wedges or cubes and then seasoned with Cajun spices.

Lastly, they are roasted or fried till they turn golden brown and crispy.

But for the sake of making them Barbeque Nation-like, we’re going to make a cajun sauce that is poured over freshly fried baby potatoes.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Skillet: To fry the potatoes.
  • Pressure Cooker: To boil the potatoes.
  • Glass Bowl: To make the sauce.
  • Bolter: To use it for straining

Ingredients in This Cajun Potatoes Recipe

Baby Potatoes: You can use normal-sized potatoes, but baby potatoes are tender, they cook faster and pack in sweet flavors.

Corn Flour: It is used as a coating over potatoes to add crunchiness, and get the beautiful golden brown color.

Chili Flakes: It is to make the sauce spice and add some texture.

Oregano: They are a bit bitter and perfectly balance the flavors of the sauce.

Mixed Herbs: It is used to enhance the overall flavor profile with their aromaticness. Here are the benefits.

Red Chili Powder: It’s to bring some added spiciness, and is completely optional.

Garlic and Onion Powder: It is basically used as a substitution for onions and garlic minus the texture, and they have a savory and pungent flavor.

Mayonnaise: It fills the cajun sauce with its savory and sweet flavor.

Milk (optional): Its main purpose is to thin out the sauce and maintain consistency.

How to make Cajun Potatoes Barbeque Nation Style

Prepare the Potatoes:

Take baby potatoes, add them to the pressure cooker, and pour some water in.

Switch on the flame to medium, and let the cooker whistle twice.

Then drain out the water and set aside the potatoes to cool down, squish the potatoes flat with their skin on.

Add red chili powder, corn flour, and salt in a bowl, and pour enough water into it for a thin batter.

Heat oil in a skillet, dip the potato patties in the batter, and shallow fry them on medium heat till they turn golden brown, then take them out.

Prepare the Sauce:

Take a bowl, and add red chili flakes, oregano, mixed herbs, red chili powder, onion powder, salt, and mayonnaise. Mix them well. The cajun sauce is ready.

Top the Potatoes with Sauce:

Plate the fried potatoes, and gently pour over the cajun sauce. Serve them hot and enjoy your cajun potatoes.

Tips & Variations

Use onion garlic paste in place of the powders: You can add onion garlic paste instead of garlic powder and onion powder in the sauce. It has a similar taste and doesn’t ruin the texture. However, only add half a teaspoon of it as they have an intense flavor.

You can use normal-sized potatoes as well: While baby potatoes are ideal for this dish, because of their shape and cooking time, you can also go for regular potatoes. Cut them into quadrants or not after cooking them in the cooker, and follow the same steps mentioned above.

Serving Options

This dish is a superb snack to serve at parties and get-togethers, sharing it with your friends and families.

The potatoes can also act as a side dish to grilled chicken and fish to complement their smokey and savory flavors with spicy ones.

The cajun sauce can also be served as a dipping sauce for various appetizers like nuggets, and fries.

Plus, it can be used as a salad dressing or a sandwich spread.

How to Store

Separate the sauce: It’s best to store the sauce separately as the potatoes will get soggy. You can place the sauce in an air-tight container

Storing potatoes: The fried potatoes may not remain fresh and will get soggy if stored in the fridge for more than 3 days. Do not freeze them as they will lose their texture and will spoil the whole dish.

Best to consume it fresh: Fried foods like this always taste the best when gobbled up fresh. You get a nice crispy texture and fresh taste.
